The (17-6, 10-1) Florida A&M Lady Rattlers were again unable to beat the (18-7, 10-2) Howard University on the road. The loss snapped the teams 14 game winning streak. And, gave the Lady Bison their fourth straight win.
The Lady Rattlers were led by Antonia Bennett, who finished the game with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Junior guard Tamoria Holmes led the Lady Bison with 21 points, shooting 8-for-19. Junior center/forward Nicole Deterville came away with a team high of eight rebounds for HU.
The Lady Rattlers took a nine point lead in the first period at the 6:56 mark. But, turnovers by FAMU allowed HU to tie the game going into the half. FAMU turned over the ball a total of 23 times Saturday afternoon. HU only turned the ball over 13 times.
The game stayed within four points up until the 2:00 mark. The lady Rattlers struggled to make points in the paint, and kept HU at the free throw line. HU was able to take a seven point lead with minutes remaining to give them the win over the Lady Rattlers, 68-61.
“We shot ourselves in the foot,” said FAMU coach Gibson, after the game. “The story of the game was our turnovers. Howard did a good job of taking what we gave them. I am not upset with my team at all. I wish we could have maintained our streak for our Rattler fans, but I would much rather a lose now than later on and get derailed from our season goal of winning a championship,” Gibson said.
The Lady Bison will go on to host the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Monday. The Lady Rattlers will travel to face the Tigers of Savannah State University, in a MEAC contest next Saturday.
