TALLAHASSEE, FLA. (franchisesportsonline.net) – The Godby Cougars went on a tear in their non-district game against Chiles, winning 94-47 at home.

The Cougars came out strong scoring the first seven points of game, and stayed ahead the rest of the contest. Godby (20-2, 7-0) put up a hefty 32 points in the first quarter, which can be attributed to their fast pace offense.

“I knew at some point if we just kept pushing the ball, we’d have a good chance of breaking them all down, and that’s what ended up happening,” Godby head coach Andrew Colville said. “I think their legs were shot and ours weren’t.”

Chiles (13-12, 2-3) brought the deficit down to 14 in the second quarter, but the Godby Cougars went on an 11-2 run in the final two minutes of the quarter to put the game out of reach for the Timberwolves.

Godby’s size played a large role on the defensive end. Their full court pressure and length caused Chiles to turn the ball over six times in the third quarter, 17 times in total. Godby was able to disrupt Chiles’ scoring that quarter as well, allowing only one point the entire quarter; Chiles shot less than 10%.

The Cougars’ size was also a factor on the offensive end. 6’7” seniors Tre Clemons and Jeremy Myers totaled 25 points. 6’9” junior Corbin Merritt had a strong showing, scoring 18 points including eight straight points near the end of the third quarter.

Coach Colville knew he had the edge down low and tried to utilize his team’s size.

“We just try to take advantage of any advantages we have, whether it’s being quicker, or bigger, whatever. Each game we try to exploit their weaknesses and use our strengths. We did a good job, Corbin Merritt was really good tonight.”

Colville also praised his team’s composure and focus this close to the conclusion of the regular season.

“It’s getting towards the end of the season—we came out and we played hard. We came and executed really well on offense, and we did well on defense too. We just played well.”

Chiles finishes the season at home with a game against Maclay on Friday night, while Godby has two more games this season; the next against Lincoln.
