TALLAHASSEE, FLA., (www.franchisesportsonline.net) – Despite an hour and a half delay, and an uncharacteristically slow start for Tallahassee Community College, the Eagles (1-0) topped Faith Baptist Christian Academy (0-1) 69-59. Tre Todd hit a big three with 3:45 remaining in the game to secure the season opener for TCC.
Though the offense never really got in gear, the Eagles played aggressive defense shutting down the Faith Baptist offense and winning the rebound battle 60-51 to make up for a lack luster night shooting the ball.
Deion Bute and Ronald Bell led the defense charge both finishing the game with a double-double. Bute’s night ended with 16 rebounds, 10 of which we offense and 10 points all of which coming in the paint. Bell had 10 points and 10 rebounds in his first game under head coach Mark White.
Tallahassee finished the night 2-17 from three-point land, good for 11 percent. Coach White, was obviously displeased with the outcome from behind the arc but chalked it up as it being opening night and just one of those games were the ball did not fall.
“This is why we preach about defense so much in games and practice.” Coach White said. “ Nights were the offense isn’t there, we will have our defense.”
“We had some good shots, they just didn’t go in.” Coach White said following the game. “But there’s no style points in basketball… a win is a win.”
Neither team was able to go on that run to pull away from the other, Faith Baptist was on the right side of a 6-0 run early in the first half that gave them the 17-15 lead. TCC would regain the lead and go into the break with a 33-29 advantage.
“We didn’t change anything (during half) we just picked up our sense of urgency in the second half” Deion Bute said. “we were able to play lockdown defense and get some more rebounds late in the game.”
With neither team able to get going offensively, forcing 2nd chance points and points off turnovers became a must. This is where Tallahassee was able to gain the much needed separation outscoring Faith Baptist 26-9 on 2nd chance points and out gained them 17-10 when it came to point off turnovers.
Tallahassee Community College will now turn their attention to Atlanta Metropolitan College. The Eagles will square off with the Trailblazers on Friday November the 4th at 7:30 P.M.
