Godby Beats Leon for the Sixth Straight Time

Alec Chessari, Correspondent

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( – Godby’s explosive run game and defense lead them to their first win of the season over Leon.

Godby was 0-2 before their Friday night win. They went on the road and played Thompson, a tough Alabama school, as well Niceville, a perennial powerhouse.  Godby came into Gene Cox stadium tonight with a different attitude.  Their running backs were explosive and their defense was ready for Leon’s offense.  The result was a 14-10 victory for Godby.

“We want to play those top caliber teams early in the season so we can expose our weaknesses,” said Godby head coach Todd Lanter.

Message of ‘Family’ helps Godby students get to college

Alec Chessari, Contributor

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( –  Godby head basketball coach Andrew Colville preaches “Family” and that’s how he transitions his players from high school to college.

“We have been blessed to have a lot of kids get scholarships and we have had nine over the last two years,” Colville said.  “It means a ton to me. I talked to Quan Jackson who is at Georgia Southern doing his first summer semester the other day. It’s like one of your own kids at home when they leave you’re sad but also happy he is doing great and he has helped me and this school.”

Colville has sent players off to Division 1, D-2 and junior collegiate programs. Jackson went off to play for Georgia Southern, Desean Enzor signed with Kings University in Tennessee, JaShon Williams signed with ASA College in Miami and Tre Clemons signed with College of Central Florida.
“We preach family and how much we care about each other. We cannot fake that with the kids.  You try to fake them out, they know,” Colville said.

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( – A complete game from Marianna sophomore pitcher Cameron Gray helped the Bulldogs win the 5A District 2 championship against Godby 7-3.

Godby could not hang on to the ball on defense and it cost them.

The Marianna Bulldogs (23-6, 5-1) scored two quick runs in the first inning. The first run, scored by Gray, came on a double steal where he stole home. The second run came on a wild pitch thrown by senior pitcher Carmen Calabrese, where Josh Baxly scored.

The Bulldogs scored again in the second and third innings, off of a throwing error and a wild pitch, and the game looked like it might get out of hand, but Godby (15-9-1, 4-2) kept their heads up and scored three runs in the third inning.

“We put the ball in play a bunch and got a couple runs we scratched back,” said Godby head coach Jayson Strickland. “Unfortunately we turned around and letdown on defense and let them right back in the game.”

Maclay Improves Winning Streak to Nine

Nick Pierce, Correspondent

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( – The last time Maclay played Godby, the Cougars won 8-2. This game, however, was completely different. Billy Grant pitched seven scoreless innings for Maclay and Max McKinley recorded four RBI, leading the Marauders to a 12-0 victory.

“We showed up today,” said Maclay coach Drew Sherrod. “That first time, for whatever reason, we didn’t play well. We didn’t throw strikes, and when we did throw strikes, we couldn’t catch or throw the ball. We also took terrible bats at the plate. When you do all of those things, you get your butt kicked.”

The Marauders sure didn’t get their butts kicked this time. They started the game by getting three straight runners on base. Grant then hit a deep single, driving in Jack Brady and Matt Caballero. This gave Maclay a 2-0 lead.

Godby’s Bats Come Alive Against East Gadsden

By: Max Fay

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( – The hits just kept coming for Godby.

Triston Anderson, Austin King and Casey Harrell all had three hits for the Cougars and Logan Lacy had four himself.

In all the Cougars (3-3) racked up 18 hits and 25 runs, routing East Gadsden 25-1 in five innings. Godby scored three in the first, two in the second, 16 in the third and added another four in the fourth for good measure.

“It was nice to come out and swing the bats tonight after we went scoreless against Lincoln,” Godby coach Jayson Strickland said. “The one thing we talked about is staying back and letting the ball travel through the zone. Our big group of seniors have been hearing us preach that the last 2-3 years. They stayed back tonight and drove the ball, sot that was great to see.”

Lacy went 4-for-4 with a couple of triples and three RBI. Both of Brantley Yount’s hits came in the 16-run third. The first a two-run double, and the second a monster three-run homer deep over the left field fence that made the score 20-1.

Dylan Hutto made his first career varsity start for Godby, completing the game with 11 strikeouts in five innings work. Hutto struck out the side in both the fourth and fifth inning.

“He stayed in the strike zone, and we struggled with that earlier this week,” Strickland said. “To pound the zone like he did, and to keep throwing strikes even after sitting for long periods of time, he did a really good job tonight.”
