CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior guard Alexa Deluzio powered the Florida State women’s basketball team to 70-54 victory over Charlotte at Halton Arena on Sunday.
Deluzio’s 22-point performance off the bench helped the Seminoles overcome a season-high 22 turnovers and a season-low .410 shooting percentage to win their seventh straight game to start the season.
“This is our first true road game,” head coach Sue Semrau said. “I knew it was going to be a different feel. It took us awhile to adjust. It’s good for us to get this under our belt and find a way to win.”
The Noles are 7-0 for the third time in school history (2009-10 and 2004-05) and have won seven in a row by double figures for just the second time ever (Jan. 28-Feb. 17, 1990).
The Seminoles shot just 34 percent in the first half, but connected on 50 percent of their field goal attempts after halftime.
Senior forward Chasity Clayton scored 15 points and grabbed six boards, while junior forward Natasha Howard tallied 15. Junior point guard Yashira “Cheetah” Delagado dished seven assists, made three steals and grabbed a career-high eight boards. The 49ers held reigning ACC Player of the Week Leo Rodriguez to three points.
“Charlotte did a really good job of covering Leo, and it’s great to have a tandem when one or the other can step up on the offensive end,” Semrau said. “Lex had a great game off the bench.”
In a back-and-forth first half, Deluzio pushed the Seminoles to a 29-25 halftime lead when she made a scooping layup and drilled a trey off a pass from Delgado 27 seconds before the break.
The Seminoles made four of their first seven shots after halftime and raced out to a 40-29 lead.
Charlotte fought back and cut the FSU lead to just 5 with 11 minutes remaining after Ny Hammonds swished a three and then found Kira Gordon for a layup.
Toles made back-to-back buckets over a 15-second span to keep Florida State in control with nine minutes left, however.
Deluzio provided the dagger when she followed a layup with a three from the corner to make the score 55-44 at the 6:20 mark in the second frame.
The Noles next game will be at Nebraska next Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

Notes: Deluzio’s 20-point game was a season-best and the ninth 20+ game of her career…Delgado has dished at least five assists in all seven games this season.
