NORFOLK, VA (Nov.5) – FAMU guard Jasmine Grice has been named the co-preseason player of the year by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Grice, who graduated this Summer, will play her final season as a graduate student. Grice was in the top 10 in NCAA Division-I scoring for most of the season, averaging 21.7 points-per-game. She finished the season as the No.9 scorer, after leading the country at one point during the 2012-2013 season. Grice will look to lead a revamped Lady Rattler lineup this season. Grice was also named to the second team All-MEAC.
Senior sharpshooter, Kimberly Sparkman, will look to add to her FAMU record for three-pointers. Last season she dropped 86 three-pointers to lead the Lady Rattlers. She was also named to the All-MEAC second team.
As a team, the Lady Rattlers were selected to finish fourth overall, by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors. The Hampton Pirates are preseason favorites to repeat as champions, followed by North Carolina A&T and Coppin State.
Last season, the Lady Rattlers finished 11-19 overall, 4-8 in the MEAC, and were ousted on the first day of the MEAC tournament. With a stable of newcomers added to the experienced veterans, the Lady Rattlers look to better even their predicted order of finish.
The Lady Rattlers will kick off the season on Fri., Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m. on “Field Trip and Set Friday,” at the Al Lawson Center. They begin play against the Jacksonville University Dolphins on Friday, before heading to Troy, Ala., to take on the Troy Trojans on Monday, in an 8 p.m. start.
