TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – (Sept.18) FAMU running back James Owens made national attention for his performance last Saturday in Bragg Stadium. He was selected as the week 3 National All-Purpose Performer of the Week, on Monday.
Owens was also selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week which was also announced on Monday.
Owens led the Rattlers to a 44-20 home-opener victory over visiting conference opponent Hampton University.
He scored three touchdowns, gaining 161 yards on 11 carries. He also had 117 return yards, along with his receiving yards, brought his all-purpose total to 282 yards.
Owens, who is just returning to full strength after a minor hamstring diversion, made the play of the game on a 57-yard scamper, outracing the entire Pirate defense for the score. He hurdled a Hampton defender to score on another touchdown.
The 5’8″, 180 lb junior is from Apopka, Fl., where he attended Wekiva High School and is a redshirt junior.
