With pyrotechnics, stretch Hummer concierge service, and a red carpet fit for an awards show, the 2011-2012 FSU Men’s Basketball Team displayed the athleticism and cohesiveness that guided them last year to a deep run in the NCAA Tournament in the Donald L. Tucker Center to begin the season..
The “Jam With Ham” started off with player intros, lively dancing by the Golden Girl FSU Dance Team, and support from the FSU Cheer Squad. Once the pleasantries were out of the way, the team did a few dribbling, passing, and fast-break drills to warm-up. Next came a 3-pt Shootout that included former FSU Center and current Toronto Raptor Solomon Alabi.
A brief 12 minute scrimmage followed the shooting exhibition, with both teams flowing freely and seldom running anything besides the occasional pick-and-roll. The staunch D the Seminoles hang their hat on could be seen in some of the transition plays, however, with Senior Xavier Gibson and Junior Rafael Portuondo among others making well-executed steals in outlet passing lanes, looking more like football defenders than basketball players. A quick dunk contest ended the evening, which drew crowd pleasers from Sophomore Forward Okaro White and Senor big man Jon Kreft.
Overall, the “Jam With Ham” was a well-hyped pep rally for a veteran team looking to build on the success of last year’s scrappy bunch. Check below for a recap of the festivities with former FSU star Solomon Alabi:
