TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State registered a pair of 1-0 victories over No. 19 Virginia Tech and No. 13 Virginia last week to remain undefeated on the year and maintain its spot atop the standings in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Senior Ines Jaurena and sophomore Hikaru Murakami played a major role in leading the Seminoles to victory and were honored for their efforts by earning weekly accolades. Jaurena was recognized on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week while Murakami grabbed a spot on Soccer America’s Team of the Week.
Jaurena notched her first career golden goal converting on a penalty kick opportunity in the 96th minute to give FSU a 1-0 victory over Virginia. It marked her third game-winning goal this year. The senior defender also played all 185 minutes on the pitch in the back line as the Seminoles extended their shutout streak to nine straight games, while moving their consecutive shutout streak to a school record 893 minutes.
Murakami found a great time to score her first collegiate goal as she scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Hokies. The Japanese native found the back of the net in the 27th minute for the eventual game-winner. The sophomore midfielder followed that performance by winning a key possession in the first overtime period against Virginia which led to a penalty kick opportunity for FSU. Following a Seminole throw-in, Virginia attempted to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box, but the 5’ 1” Murakami got in front of a Virginia player to regain possession sending a pass to Jamia Fields, who was fouled seconds later in the box leading to a penalty kick and the eventual golden goal scored by Jaurena.
Jaurena, Murakami and the Seminoles are back in action this week with a pair of matches. No. 1 FSU will begin the week at No. 24 Boston College Thursday, October 18 at 7 p.m., followed with a Sunday afternoon match at No. 7 Maryland.
