TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner is reaping the rewards from a terrific start to his junior year.
In FSU’s 69-3 season-opening win last weekend, Werner registered career highs in tackles for loss (five) and sacks (four) while also adding a forced fumble and a pass breakup in just over a half of action. The Berlin, Germany native’s five tackles for loss were just one shy of tying the school record of six that has been in place since 1967.
The last FSU player to register at least four sacks in a game was Alonzo Jacksonin 2002.
For his efforts, Werner was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Linemen of the Week Tuesday.
That honor came a day after he was name the Lott Trophy’s IMPACT Player of the Week. In recognition of Werner’s performance, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the Lott IMPACT Trophy, will make a $1,000 donation to the general scholarship fund at Florida State.
Werner was also named the National Defensive Performer and earned National Defensive Lineman of the Week honors from the College Football Performance Awards.
