STARKVILLE, Miss. (Dec. 16) – The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team dropped their sixth straight game as Mississippi State defeated the Lady Rattlers, 67-57,here Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.
FAMU (2-7) had four Lady Rattlers to score in double-figures as Jasmine Grice scored a team-high 18 points, followed by Cristal Liriano with 13, while both Patrice Collie and Kimberly Sparkman both finished with 10 points each. Grice led FAMU on the boards with eight, while both Collie and Keturah Martin finished with four assists each.
MSU (5-5) was paced by Sherise Williams as she scored a game-high 21 points, followed by Kendra Grant with 12. Martha Alwal led the Bulldogs on the boards with 11, while Katia May led MSU in assists with five.
MSU jumped out to a 7-4 lead on a Williams layup with 17:13 to go in the first.
The Lady Rattlers would outscore the Bulldogs 10-7 in five minutes, cutting MSU’s lead to 20-19 on a Liriano three pointer with 8:44 to go in the first. Grice would give FAMU a 25-24 lead on a three-pointer with 6:23 to in the half.
MSU would close out the half with an 8-5 run as they went into the break with a 32-30 lead.
FAMU finished the first half shooting 33.3 percent (11-of-33), while MSU shot 41.4 percent (12-of-29).
MSU opened the second half with a 44-36 lead with 13:21 to go in the second on a Williams layup.
The Lady Rattlers took a 49-48 lead on a pair of Liriano free-throws with 8:53 left to go in the game, capping a 10-3 run by FAMU.
MSU would conclude the half with a 10-2 run for the 67-57 win.
FAMU finished the game shooting 29.7 percent (22-of-74), while MSU shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53). The Lady Rattlers held the rebounding edge over the Bulldogs at, 40-38.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Wednesday, December 19 as they will travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on Saint Frances in a 3 p.m. tip in the Wright State Tournament.
