TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – An Elizabeth Styles layup with 2:05 to go the game, gave the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions a 61-59 lead over the Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team and they held on to defeat the Lady Rattlers 62-59, here Saturday evening at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU (2-6) had three Lady Rattlers to score in double-figures as Jasmine Grice finished with a double-double as she scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Cristal Liriano tallied 15 points on the night, while Kimberly Sparkman pumped in 11. Grice led the Rattles in assists with four.
For SELA, (5-2) Styles and Symone Miller led the Lady Lions in scoring as they both finished with 14 points each. Brandi Simmons rounded out the cast of SELA players to score in double-figures as she finished with a double-double in 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Lions grabbed an early 7-4 lead on an Aja Gibson layup with 17:47 to go in the first.
FAMU would recapture the lead on a Liriano three-pointer with 15:03 left in the half, giving the Lady Rattlers an 11-9 lead.
Nanna Poole tied the game at 20-20 for the Lady Lions as she made a layup with 7:03 to go in the half, capping an 8-4 run by SELA.
FAMU would close out the half with a 15-8 run as they went into the break with a 35-28 lead. The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting 37.0 percent (10-of-27), while the Lady Lions shot 41.4 percent (12-of-29).
SELA opened the second half with a 7-2 run as Jameika Hoskins nailed a three-pointer with 16:18 to go in the game, tying the contest at 37-37.
FAMU responded with an 11-0 run as Grice connected on a field goal with 12:49 to go in the game, giving the Lady Rattlers a 48-37 lead.
Styles gave the Lady Lions a 56-55 lead on made layup with 3:56 to go in the game, capping a 19-7 run by the Lady Lions.
Grice would tie the game at 59-59 on a made field goal with 2:42 to go in the game.
That would be the last points the Lady Rattlers would score as Styles would score a field goal and convert one of two free throws as the Lady Lions held on for the 62-59 win.
The Lady Rattlers finished the game shooting 34.5 percent (19-of-55), whereas the Lady Lions shot 46.4 percent (26-of-46). SELA held the rebounding margin over FAMU 38-33.
FAMU will return to action on Sun., Dec. 16, as the Lady Rattlers will travel to the Magnolia State to take on Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Miss., in a 2 p.m. start.
