Lady Rattlers Drop Tough Match To Troy Trojans

TROY,ALA (Sept.18) – The FAMU Lady Rattlers, (2-8, 0-0 MEAC), dropped a tough match 3-0 to the Troy Trojans (9-6) tonight at Sartain Hall, on the campus of Troy University.

Katherine Huanec would lead the Lady Rattlers in kills with seven, while a trio scored five each. Pamela Barrera, Maria Ceccarelli and Yeisha Arcia scored the majority of the Lady Rattlers’ points.

Karol Marquez provided solid defense with 18 digs, while Diana Gonzales had eight, to go along with 18 assists.

In the first set, the Trojans took a 7-3 lead on an attack error by Arcia. The rally forced the Rattlers to call a timeout and regroup, scoring two points in a row to move to within two points out of the break. The game was back and forth as the Trojans rotated 19 players in and out of the game. Troy built an 11-6 lead before Pamela Barrera got a kill on a short set, catching the Trojans off guard. The Trojans would take a 15-8 lead before the next timeout.

Head coach Tony Trifonov would implement a strategy to infuse some scoring in his team during that timeout. Alexandra Alexander of Troy, scored an ace out of the break, which wasn’t quite what the Rattlers expected coming out. Attack errors would hamper the comeback effort as the Trojans built up a 17-10 lead. Ceccarelli would serve the next point in which the Lady Rattlers won. Continual attack errors would be the achilles heel of the Lady Rattlers as they dropped the first set 25-13.

In the first set Katherine Huanec would lead the scoring with three kills, while Arcia carded two.

For the Trojans, Pickart would gather five kills, while Von Pingel scored four. The Trojans would get 16 kills int he first set, to just seven for the Lady Rattlers.

Game No.2 would start with the Lady Rattlers on the attack. They got to within one on a Marquez serve, and then tie the game at 7-7, before Cullity dropped a shot between defenders to go up 8-7. The Lady Rattlers would again tie the game at 8-8, before giving up three consecutive points to Troy. Alexander gave the Rattlers their ninth point on a service return error, but the Torjans would increase their lead to 12-9, before Huanec spiked a point for the Lady Rattlers. The Rattlers took a timeout at the 15-12 mark in the second game. Barrera got another kill on a short set bringing the score to 18-16, but the Trojans would pull away and win the game 25-18.

In set three, the Lady Rattlers took a 6-5 lead early. FAMU took a 10-7 lead on solid team play and hustle, following serves by Marquez. They would give away two consecutive points as Arcia and Gonzales had service errors. The errors would allow the Trojans to crawl back into the game at 13-12. Huanec would find an open space in the Trojans’ defense for the 16-15 lead, but an attack error would allow the Trojans to tie the Rattlers at 16-16. From there Troy would go on a run, moving ahead 21-19. After a timeout by Trifonov, the Lady Rattlers would win two straight point to force Troy to take a timeout with the score 23-21. Troy capped off the night with two straight points to win the match.

The Lady Rattlers will take 10 days off before opening conference play next Friday against the Savanna State Lady Tigers at 7 p.m. They will also face the S.C. State Lady Bulldogs on Sun., Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. Both games can be seen on Mon., Oct 1 on tape delay.
