LOUISVILLE, KY – The FAMU women’s cross country team took seventh place in a talented field of 17 team in the Greater Louisville Cross Country meet. The Lady Rattlers had three runners to finish in the top 15 in the meet.
Effiey Kosgei continued to lead the Rattlers, taking seventh place overall in a time of 18:38.31. Cynthia Chelelgo took the No.14 place in 19:04.78, while QuanDra Shanks took the No.15 spot in 19:06.72 to round out the trio of Lady Rattlers to finish in the top 15 in the race. Overall, there were 211 runners in the race.
Head coach Darlene Moore was pleased with the outcome of the meet. “The team actually did better than I expected, because as a coach and as athletes, we were all nervous to be running in this caliber of a meet. For my young ladies to perform that well lets me know that they are gearing up and getting their mindset ready for the MEAC championship in a couple of weeks,” moore said.
Zenia George, Cirea Williams and Chandelic Jackson rounded out the cast of runners for FAMU. George took the No.76 spot in 20:23.50, Williams finished at No.98 in 21:05.95, while Jackson finished in the middle of the pack at the No.100 slot in 21:11.32.
The Lady Rattlers garnered 205 points for the meet, finishing eighth overall out of 18 teams.
Moore’s analysis of the meet indicated a possible positive strategy coming to the Lady Rattlers. “The one thing that stood out to me from the meet was that the young ladies getting a strong start. When we take off, I should see nothing but orange and green in the front and they did just that. With three young ladies finishing in the top 15, I was very, very pleased,” Moore said.
The Lady Rattlers will compete this Friday at the Florida State cross country invitational at the Apalachee Regional Park.
