ALBANY, GA (Sept.8)– The FAMU Lady Rattlers cross country team took first place int he Albany State Invitational Cross Country meet on Saturday. The Lady Rattlers are the defending champions of the event, but this year’s team has been revamped and the meet was the barometer for the rest of the season.
The Lady Rattlers were led by first-year runner Cynthia Chelelgo who ran a time of 24:13. FAMU cross country star Chandelic Jackson took second place on the squad with a 25:06 time. Simone Durden pulled a third place time on the squad with a time of 25:35. First-year runner Zenia George took fourth in 25:47, while Ariel Allen took fifth in 26:15.
Moore was pleased with what she saw. “I was pleased with the time that the young ladies ran for a four mile race for this time in the season. This was a promising result for the rest of the season and the MEAC competition. The team of veterans knew what the goal was from the end of last season at the MEAC championship. Since then they knew the incoming goal. They have been on task and orientated the new girls on the philosophy of the team. The team is on the same accord of working hard and making each other better,” Moore said.
This week, the Lady Rattlers will compete in the UF Mountain Dew Cross Country Invitational in Gainesville. Moore said the goal of the team is to make a top 10 finish, avenging a last place finish when she took over the team in 2009. “We are looking to be a top 10 team in one of the most prestigious meets in the state of Florida,” Moore added.
