Lady Rattlers Use Balance To Defeat NCA&T 3-0

GREENSBORO, NC (Oct.7) – The FAMU Lady Rattlers (6-8, 4-0 MEAC) remained unbeaten in MEAC play as they blanked the Aggies of NC A&T (0-22, 0-3 MEAC) by a score of 3-0, today in Moore Gymnasium. The Lady Rattlers used a balanced attack from Yeisha Arcia and Maria Ceccarelli, who scored 15 kills each to lead FAMU. Pamela Barrera finished out the Lady Rattlers scoring double-digit kills with 11.

Diana Gonzales had one of her most successful outings as the FAMU setter, dishing out 42 assists. Karol Marquez was solid defensively, coming up with 16 digs.

Brooke Stamnes led the Aggies with seven kills to lead the Aggies. Aleena McDaniel and April McRae were the next two most effective Aggie scorers, carding six and four kills respectively.

Chelsea Fox led the Aggies with 18 assists, while Stamnes collected 14 digs defensively.

In the first set, Arcia scored a kill to take the Rattlers up by a 10-4 margin. A kill by NCA&T’s McRae brought the Aggies to within an 11-9 margin. A final kill by Ceccarelli would give the Lady Rattlers the victory at 25-27.

The second set would start out more competitive, but end in the same 25-17 margin. The Rattlers and Aggies would go tit-for-tat, being tied at 7-7 early in the set. The Lady Rattlers would rattle off three consecutive scores as Ceccarelli, Katherine Huanec and a service ace by Gonzales put the Rattlers up 10-7. A Ceccarelli service error brought the Aggies to within one point at 16-15. But, that would be as close as the match would get as FAMU went on a run of four points, making the score 20-15. An attacks error by TeBorah Hawkins would end the set.

The Aggies would draw first blood in the third set on a kill by Stamnes. Barrera would get a kill on a quick set from Gonzales to tie the set at 1-1. A blocking error by Barrera opened the door for the Aggies, as they tied the game again at 9-9. Ceccarelli would get two consecutive kills to move the Lady Rattlers to 11-9. A kill by Arica on a Gonzales set gave FAMU an 18-12 lead. Barrera would make the final kill off a Gonzales set, ending the set and match at 25-14.

The Lady Rattlers return to action on Friday, as they take on the rival Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at home in the Al Lawson Center, in a 7 p.m. start.
