TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State’s Stephen McGee was recently added to the Johnny Bench Award watch list as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Tuesday, May 8. The Johnny Bench Award is presented to the top collegiate catcher in the nation.
McGee has been a workhorse for the Seminoles serving as the starting catcher in every game this year. The redshirt sophomore has caught 411 of a possible 429 innings and has done a tremendous job leading a pitching staff that consists of five freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and three seniors and ranks fourth in the ACC with a team ERA of 3.24. McGee is fielding .982 and is throwing out 33.3 percent of base stealers on the year.
The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native is hitting .248 with eight doubles, 26 RBI and 27 runs scored. McGee leads the team with 13 hit-by-pitches, ranks second with 47 walks and third with an on-base percentage of .461. He ranks tied for second in the ACC in walks and seventh in on-base percentage.
A total of 63 college catchers are represented on the final watch list as the list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced by 5:00 p.m. CST on May 16, 2012.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2012. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2012.
