TAMPA,FL (Sept.7)- The FAMU Rattlers cross country team took first place in the USF Invitational 8K cross country meet today. The Rattlers took the crown with 59 points, with four Rattlers in the top 20.
Sophomore Elias Cheshire led the Rattlers, coming in second place overall in a time of 26:23. Kevin Marindich took third place overall in a time of 26:50. Shuaib Winters III took home 10th place in 27:47. Lamere Buchanon came in 16th in 28:02. Dieumy Duclos rounded out the team in 28:50, finishing 31st overall.
The moderate times were due to a rain-soaked course. The event was held at USF’s CLAW golf course. Coach Wayne Angel was happy to see the team coming together and happy to see some alumni bear the weather to watch the team run. “It feels good because I know we have a good team. They started out with the jitters, but they overcame it and performed beautifully,” Angel said.
Rains prevailed during the day in Tampa, so the course was drenched. Adding to the tough conditions was the fact that the women had run their race before the men got on the course, which made it sloshy.
It was a good start to a promising season for the Rattlers. “As we prepare to compete next week at the University of Florida’s Mountain Dew Invitational, I feel confident that this may be one of the best cross country team’s in FAMU history. It feels really, really good to start off the season beating good competition,” Angel concluded.
The final team scores were as follows: 1. FAMU (59), 2. Nova Southeastern (75), 3. Embry-Riddle (79), 4. University of Miami (90), 5. University of Tampa (101), 6. USF (126), 7. FAU (154), 8. St. Leo (196) and FIU (252).
