TALLAHASSEE, FLA., (franchisesportsonline.net) – Godby took care of business against Florida High in their first playoff game, coming away with an 83-53 victory. Godby’s frontcourt was just too much for the Seminoles to handle. Cougar big man Londell King finished the night with 23 points and forward Jaylin Stewart added 14 points.
Florida High (5-19) came out in a 2-3 zone defense in an attempt to keep Godby’s long athletic bigs from getting easy baskets down low. The strategy worked to start the game. The Cougars (27-0) struggled to find their rhythm early on, and Florida High took advantage of some sloppy ball handling, recording five steals in the first six minutes of the game.
Broderick Simpson’s three-pointer gave the Seminoles a 12-11 lead, but unfortunately that would be their last of the night. Godby responded with a 26-0 run capped off by a reverse layup from Stewart. During that eight-minute stretch, Godby held the Seminoles to 0-for-14 from the field and forced five turnovers.
“We started off a little slow,” said Godby coach Andrew Colville. “We started the game shooting too many outside shots instead of taking advantage of our post presence, but we’re going to get everyone’s best shot. We just have to come out and make sure every night we bring it.”
It was Godby’s transition offense that had Florida High on their heels in the first half. The Cougars converted 16 fast break points in the first half alone and took a 43-17 lead into halftime.
