FAMU Basketball Team Tips Off First Scrimmage of The Season

By: Marcus Joseph
The Florida A&M basketball team got to work early Saturday morning in the Al Lawson Multi Purpose Gymnasium, for the team’s first official orange and white scrimmage of the 2011-2012 season.
Players and coaches started Saturday’s scrimmage with a brief meeting with the referees, to go over 2011-2012 MEAC rule changes.
The team tipped-off, and got off to a fast-paced performance, which is what coach Clemon Johnson hopes to implement and utilize with his team this season.
“The scrimmage went quite well,” said Johnson. “I am very pleased with what I saw today.”

With the alumni back home, the sun shining, and scene as festive as ever, the 2011 Homecoming Game was going as scheduled for Florida A&M’s football team. Even though they were equaled in first downs (11) by their opponents, the score at halftime was a comfortable 21-0. The band rocked the crowd, and all was well on “the yard”. Ominous rain clouds then swooped down over Bragg Memorial Stadium, whisking away a few fair-weather Rattler fans for an early start on the post-game parties. It seems as though the football team unfortunately took the same cue, with a dreadful 2nd half performance that was nothing short of a complete collapse.

Scoring a mind-boggling 29 points in the final quarter, the Howard Bison stampeded to a 1-point victory in as bizarre a final portion of a football game as one could witness. Though FAMU still had a healthy lead at 28-13, a 54 yard slant pass from Bison QB Greg McGhee to WR Willie Carter, with the latter player resembling a young Jerry Rice in the West Coast Offense slashing through the middle of the Rattler D, opened the floodgates for what was to come.
