TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Sept.23) –The Florida A&M men’s cross country team has been ranked 12th in the South Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), announced today. The Rattlers are ranked on the heels of the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are ranked 11th in the poll.
After finishing last season as high as eighth in the NCAA Division-I South Region, the Rattlers begin the 2013 campaign with a solid ranking based on last year’s finish and a solid start this season. In addition, the Rattlers return three of it’s top five runners, who were members of the 2012 championship team..
Highlighted among the returnees is 2012 MEAC outstanding cross country athlete Elias Chesire Additionally, All-MEAC performers Kevin Marindich, Dieumy Duclos and Robyel Kidane return to the squad.
Head coach Wayne Angel reloaded the team with two new stars to continue the quest to defend their MEAC title. Daniel Cheruiyot and Geoffrey Sambu have added to the arsenal of runners the Rattlers will present this season.
The Rattlers competed in the Georgia State Invitational on Friday, finishing second to fifth-ranked
Auburn Tigers and defeating the ninth-ranked University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. New comers Sambu and Cheriuyot were the top finishers placing fourth and fifth respectively. They were followed by Chesire and Marindich, who finished eighth and ninth. Also in the Top 20 were Duclos (18) and Kidane (34).
“The teams performance was very good,” Angel said following the meet. “We almost defeated SEC powerhouse Auburn today. Chesire struggled, but I’m confident that he will rise to the occasion in Fayetteville in two weeks. Although conditions were tough today with high temperatures and many rolling hills, these Rattlers still struck fear in the hearts of their competition. I’m so proud of them,” Angel concluded.
