Trifonov Voted MEAC Volleyball Coach of the Year

NORFOLK, VA (Nov.15) – The MEAC announced the 2012 All-MEAC and All-Academic teams today, naming head coach Tony Trifonov as the MEAC coach of the year, his fifth time since taking the reigns at FAMU. The Lady Rattlers compiled the only perfect record in the conference at 10-0. Three Lady Rattlers made the All-MEAC second team. In addition five Lady Rattlers made the commissioner’s all-academic team.

Senior middle blocker Pamela Barrera, freshman outside hitter Yeisha Arcia and senior libero Karol Marquez all made second team All-MEAC. Barrera, Marquez, Joanie Del Castillo, Diana Gonzales and Katherine Huanec all made the commissioner’s all-academic team.

Marquez, who finished the season as the MEAC leader in digs with 390 (5.13/game), was the biggest surprise in the selection. She was a pre-season first team All-MEAC selection, but after a stellar season where she led the conference in her category and place No.48 in the nation, was delegated to the second team; even while she led the Lady Rattlers to the top of the MEAC in digs with 1,064. She also had 33 blocks and 50 assists on the season.

Barrera, had her most successful season since her freshman campaign. She had 182 kills, 61 digs and 42 blocks. She also had 16 service aces. She led the MEAC in hitting percentage at .392., which ranked her No.15 nationally for hitting percentage. No other HBCU volleyball player is ranked in the Top 50 of that statistics category. As a team, the Lady Rattlers were second in hitting percentage at .227 on the season.

Arcia, led the Lady Rattlers in kills with 268. As a team, FAMU finished with 968, to lead the conference overall, while Arcia personally finished No.5 in kills at 3.53/game. The versatile defender, Arcia garnered 189 digs. As a team, the Lady Rattlers were also No.2 in assists with 883.

The Lady Rattlers begin play tomorrow in the MEAC Volleyball Championship in Baltimore, MD on the campus of Coppin State University. The Lady Rattlers, who emerged as the only undefeated team in the MEAC, take their No.1 see in the southern division up against the Coppin State Eagles, tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Coppin State University Physical Education Complex.
