GREENSBORO, N.C. – A pair of lopsided season-opening victories by the Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams last week helped the Seminoles sweep the first Atlantic Coast Conference cross country Performer of the Week honors.
Sophomore Zak Seddon and junior Hannah Walker claimed individual victories as the Seminole men and women rolled to victory during Friday’s Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C., home to Appalachian State.
Seddon recorded his second collegiate cross country victory, leading the Seminole men past five other teams at the State Farm Field course. The Great Britain native cruised the 8k course in 25:41.43 to edge teammate Josh Gracia as the Seminoles claimed five of the top seven finishing positions to win the team title with a meager 19 points. It was Seddon’s first victory since claiming the 2012 Virginia Tech Invitational/Pre-ACC meet last season, which also secured ACC Performer of the Week honors.
Not to be outdone, Walker pulled away from the field over the final kilometer to capture the women’s individual title in her United State collegiate debut. The junior transfer from the University of Birmingham ran away to victory in the 5k race in 18:05.88. Walker lead a parade of seven consecutive Seminoles across the finish line as the nation’s second-ranked team registered a perfect 15-point scoring total.
FSU’s teams will get back into practice mode before resuming action on Sept. 20 at the Wake Forest Invitational/Pre-ACC meet, which will be contested at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C., the host site for the ACC Championship meet.
